Europe is experiencing an intense heatwave, being driven by a persistent high-pressure system, sometimes referred to as Omega Block, which is creating a heat dome. Omega Block is a stagnant atmospheric pattern where a high-pressure system is sandwiched between two low-pressure systems, locking extreme weather in place for days. That locked extreme weather is what a 'heat dome' is.
