Botswana kills 23 elephants for Independence Day meat

Botswana authorised the killing of 23 elephants to provide meat for rural communities during its 60th Independence Day celebrations. Conservationists and former President Ian Khama criticised the move. Botswana holds the world's largest elephant population (~130,000) and lifted its hunting ban in 2019, issuing annual quotas of 200–400 elephants.
