Why does Earth get colder when it is closest to Sun?
short by Anmol Sharma / on Monday, 29 December, 2025
Earth is closest to the Sun in early January but the Northern Hemisphere still has winter because seasons depend on Earth tilt and not distance. In winter, the northern half tilts away from the Sun, so sunlight falls at a slant and spreads across a larger area. Days are shorter so less heat reaches the surface and temperatures remain low.
