Kitchen sponges release microplastics during dishwashing: Study

A University of Bonn-led study found kitchen sponges release microplastics as they wear down during everyday dishwashing. Depending on sponge type, annual emissions ranged from 0.68 grams to 4.21 grams per person. However, researchers noted that water consumption, not microplastics, accounts for 85% to 97% of the total environmental impact of hand-washing dishes.
