Why has US deployed weapons in space?

The US has admitted to deploying weapons in space for the first time. The US Space Force said it has deployed weapons in space to counter growing threats from China and Russia. It said that China is rapidly developing counterspace capabilities, including space-based weapons that could seek and destroy targets, while Russia views space as a warfighting domain.
