How do chess ratings work?

short by Pravel Jain / on Friday, 18 September, 2026
Classical chess uses the Elo rating system. After each encounter between rated players, their ratings are modified according to the result. The winner takes points from the loser, and the lower-rated player takes points from the higher-rated one in case of a draw. The number of points gained or lost depends on the rating gap between the opponents.
