Why does an elected US President take oath in January, months after November polls?

Though the US elections are held in November, the elected President takes oath on January 20. Originally, there was a four-month gap between election and inauguration days to allow a power transfer between the outgoing president to their successor. This period, called the "lame duck" period, was reduced to a little less than three months in 1933.
