Several new football laws will come into effect at FIFA World Cup 2026. Players covering their mouth with a hand, arm or shirt in confrontational situations will be shown a red card. Players leaving the field to protest a referee's decision will also face red cards. Referees will now use a visual five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal-kicks too.
