Australia passes law to levy tech giants that don’t pay for local news

Australia has passed legislation requiring major tech platforms to pay a levy if they fail to strike commercial news deals with local publishers. The News Bargaining Incentive imposes a 2.5% tax on advertising revenue, with funds going to Australian news outlets. Meta, Google, TikTok and LinkedIn can avoid the levy by reaching agreements with at least eight publishers.
