A study by 'The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia' published in 2026 found that the economic burden of typhoid on India's public health system was more than ₹12,000 crore in 2023. It added that antibiotic-resistant infections accounted for 87% of total costs and 70,000 families faced catastrophic health expenditure. The study further said households bore 91% of expenses.
