At least two people reportedly died during massive celebrations after over a million people gathered, mainly around Mexico City's Angel of Independence, as the national team advanced to FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16. A 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died of suffocation. The celebrations followed Mexico's win over Ecuador, their first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1986.
