What is the difference between severance & gratuity?

Gratuity is paid to reward long service, while severance is paid when the employer initiates an exit. An employer must pay gratuity once an employee completes the minimum years of continuous service. Severance typically applies during layoffs, redundancy, restructuring, or shutdowns. Gratuity enjoys tax exemptions up to prescribed limits when paid as per law, Severance is usually taxed as salary.
