How do people decide when to return a favour?

A study has found out that people generally reciprocate favours in symmetric relationships, such as with friends, cousins or co-workers of equal rank. However, their expectations change in asymmetric relationships, where each person has a different social status. People in such relationships expect that the person who earlier did a favour would also do so in future.
