When are gifts taxed?

Gifts, like cash, cheques, property and other valuables, which are given without consideration and exceed ₹50,000 in a financial year are taxed in accordance with the Income Tax Act. However, if such gifts are given by close relatives, including a person's spouse, parents and siblings, they are exempt. Moreover, gifts received at the time of marriage are also not taxed.
