DNA study reveals koalas went extinct before humans arrived

Scientists at the University of Sydney used genomic analysis to study koala evolution, and revealed that koalas faced a severe population decline about 1 lakh years ago, much before humans arrived in Australia. The study suggested that all living koalas may descend from a single ancestral population that survived climatic changes, with numbers later rising during the current interglacial period.
