TRAI proposes licences for free internet TV apps on smart TVs

TRAI has recommended that free ad-supported streaming TV apps on smart TVs require a government licence under the Telecommunications Act, 2023. The 20-year licence would cost ₹1 lakh. Internet-only news channels would face stricter rules. TV makers must disable unauthorised apps. The ministry, which sought the recommendations in December 2025, will decide whether to accept them.
