What is Thalassaemia and what are its symptoms?

May 8 is observed as the World Thalassaemia Day. Thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder characterised by insufficient haemoglobin production, leading to a shortage of red blood cells and, consequently, anaemia. Its symptoms include fatigue, weakness, pale or yellowish skin, facial bone deformities, slow growth and dark urine. Patients with thalassaemia major have to undergo repeated transfusion.
