Common swift lives in sky for up to 10 months, sleeps while gliding

Scientists have confirmed that the common swift can stay airborne for up to ten months, spending nearly 99% of its life in flight. The birds eat, mate and possibly sleep while gliding, landing mainly to breed. Researchers say the finding highlights an extreme biological adaptation, while warning that climate change, pesticide use and habitat loss threaten the swift’s survival.
