The rapid spread of balding in a Maharashtra village has sent shockwaves, prompting the health department to initiate an investigation into the cause. According to the initial investigations, nitrate contamination in water has led to people losing their hair. Elevated nitrate levels were found in 14 of the 31 samples tested and residents have been warned against using tube-well water.
