10,000-year-old mastodon tooth found in California

Geomorphologist Brigid Lynch discovered a remarkably preserved Pacific mastodon molar at a San Mateo County preserve, initially mistaking it for a rock. The 8.5-inch tooth, confirmed by paleontologists as the most complete of its kind in the region, has been donated to Stanford University for carbon dating and 3-D scanning.
