The Nobel Prize was set up when inventor Alfred Nobel died and left majority of his fortune to the establishment of prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. In his will dated November 27, 1895, he stated that the prizes should be awarded to "those who, during preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
