Days getting longer as Earth's spin is slowing down
short by Daisy Mowke / on Sunday, 15 March, 2026
Climate change is slowing Earth's rotation at a rate that's unprecedented for past 3.6 million years, shows research. This is due to melting polar ice caps and glaciers, which redistribute water toward equator. This shift in mass increases Earth's moment of inertia, causing it to spin more slowly. Scientists found days are increasing by about 1.33 milliseconds every 100 years.
