The Kerala government on Tuesday set up a department dedicated to the welfare of senior citizens in the state, officials said. Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan said the move could be the first of its kind in the country. The department, which was part of UDF's manifesto, will be responsible for designing and implementing new welfare schemes for the elderly.
