When trying to quit smoking, people may experience multiple withdrawal symptoms. They may feel irritable, anxious or even depressed as stopping consumption of nicotine, an ingredient of cigarettes, affects the brain's pleasure centres. As nicotine widens bronchial tubes, quitting smoking may also cause shallow breathing and hyperventilation. The lungs may also clear excess toxin-containing mucous.
