Why is Japan so earthquake-prone?

Japan is exceptionally earthquake-prone because it sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet. The Pacific, Philippine Sea, Eurasian, and North American (Okhotsk region) plates constantly push and slide against each other, causing undersea quakes that can also trigger tsunamis. A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday.
