Bangladesh halts hilsa imports from India, may not export fish

Bangladesh has stopped importing hilsa, including from India and Myanmar, after cancelling no-objection certificates issued to 103 fish importers. Industry insiders believe the move aims to prevent imported Indian hilsa from being sold as Padma hilsa, curb under-invoicing and boost domestic production. Bangladesh may also withhold permission to export hilsa to India ahead of Durga Puja.
