Myanmar junta to free 5,864 prisoners to mark Independence Day

Myanmar's military government will release 5,864 prisoners, including 180 foreigners, under an amnesty, state media said on Saturday. The annual pardon will mark the country's 77th Independence Day. Notably, Myanmar regularly announces large-scale prisoner release orders on its Independence Day. Among those still imprisoned by the junta is the country's former leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
