short by Sourav Kumar / on Wednesday, 27 May, 2026
Scientists at Kyoto University have found that human blood cells may have evolved from single-celled ancestors that lived nearly 700 million years ago. Using a new method to compare gene expression across species, researchers mapped the evolutionary history of blood cells. Notably, among all blood cell types studied, macrophages showed the strongest similarities to unicellular organisms.
