The Maharashtra government has decided to shut all 116 sub-jails that operated under revenue department, ending a colonial-era prison system. Of the 116 sub-jails across Maharashtra, only 36 remained operational while remaining 80 had already ceased functioning, many due to dilapidated conditions and need for repairs. The rights groups described the sub-jails as Maharashtra's "abandoned prisons".
