What is Brent crude oil and why does it dictate global oil prices?

Brent crude, which sets prices for about 67% of worldwide oil trade in Europe, Africa and parts of Asia, has contracts with prices anchored to actual deliveries from North Sea extraction sites. It's classified as "light sweet crude" due to its low sulphur content, which makes its refining into petrol and diesel easier. Both these aspects make it trustworthy benchmark.
