Restaurants can't add service charge to bills without informing customers: Govt body in warning

Hotels and restaurants cannot levy a service charge on customers' bill without informing them, nor can they treat it as a mandatory payment, Central Consumer Protection Authority warned. The CCPA launched an action against several restaurants after National Consumer Helpline received complaints from consumers who submitted invoices showing that a service charge had been added to their bills.
