Bhutan first in SE Asia to eliminate dog-transmitted rabies

WHO has validated Bhutan as the first country in the South-East Asia Region to eliminate dog-transmitted rabies as a public health problem. The achievement, announced on September 4, 2026, was made possible through Bhutan's sustained One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health sectors with coordinated surveillance, dog vaccination, and post-exposure prophylaxis.
