The Supreme Court said conducting SIR isn't beyond the ECI's statutory powers (ultra vires) and cannot be invalidated only because it differs from ordinary revision. It noted that the 12 documents (11 originally and the Aadhaar Card on SC's order) sought by the ECI for verification were not "arbitrary". SIR serves the goal of "free and fair elections", it added.
