US technology sector has announced 1.23 lakh job cuts so far this year, up 66% from the 74,716 layoffs recorded last year, according to a Challenger report. The sector remains the biggest source of job cuts in 2026. In May alone, fintech companies announced 5,731 layoffs, with most citing AI as a key reason for the workforce reductions.
