What is Daylight Saving Time and why is it used in US?

Daylight Saving Time in US entails moving clocks from 2:00am to 3:00am on second Sunday in March and moving them from 2:00am to 1:00am on first Sunday in November each year. This is done to extend period of daylight that people can experience while they're awake. It also reduces the need for artificial lighting in evenings and decreases energy consumption.
