Assam cabinet approves Muslim marriage registration rules

Assam cabinet approved the Muslim Marriage Registration (Compulsory) Rules, 2026, replacing the 1935 Act. Marriages and divorces must now be registered with government registrars within 30 days. Kazis can no longer register marriages. The move aims to curb child marriages. Violations can attract up to 2 years imprisonment or fines up to ₹50,000.
