Israel and Arab states led by Egypt and Syria engaged in a conflict in 1973 in which Israel was supported by US while Arab states were backed by then Soviet Union. The Arab oil-producing nations decided to use oil as a weapon and announced an oil embargo against nations considered friendly to Israel (US, the Netherlands, UK, Japan and Canada).
