What is airglow?

Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla shared a video on X showing Earth's curved horizon, city lights and a faint glow along the planet's edge. The glow is called airglow, a natural light produced by gases in Earth's upper atmosphere. It occurs when sunlight energises atmospheric atoms and molecules, causing them to release light and creating a faint, continuous glow.
