The government-owned BSNL is planning to lay off around 19,000 employees or 35% of its workforce through a second voluntary retirement (VRS) scheme. The proposal is awaiting approval from Ministry of Finance. BSNL has sought ₹15,000 crore to meet costs of the proposed VRS. BSNL is aiming to bring its wage bill to about ₹5,000 crore from nearly ₹7,500 crore.
