World’s heaviest insect brought back from brink of extinction
The world's heaviest insect, the Wetapunga, which was considered "endangered" in the 1990s, has seen 11,000 individuals released into the wild in New Zealand through a breeding programme to boost its population. The insects were released across 10 wild sites and can grow up to 10-cm long. They primarily inhabit Auckland's Hauraki Gulf and areas off the coast of Northland.
