In a crucial group-stage match against US in FIFA World Cup 1994, Colombia defender Andrés Escobar scored an own goal, leading to Colombia's 2-1 defeat and eventual elimination from the tournament. Days after returning to Colombia, Escobar was shot dead. The murder was regarded as a revenge by gangsters who had incurred losses while betting on Colombia during the tournament.
