Researchers from Germany recreated black hole conditions in a lab using lasers and special optical fibre. They observed Hawking radiation (black holes evaporate by giving off heat). They also observed its long-predicted backreaction, the energy loss caused by the emitted radiation for the first time in an analogue system. The study showed both effects arise from the same underlying mechanism.
