Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won a parliamentary seat in northern England, opening the possibility of a challenge to PM Keir Starmer’s leadership of Labour Party. Burnham, who secured the Makerfield seat with 54.8% of votes, said he aims to counter the rise of polarising, populist politics. Starmer, meanwhile, faces some of the worst approval ratings of any British leader.
