Character.AI, once valued at $1 billion, files for bankruptcy

Character.AI, an AI startup founded by ex-Google engineers and once valued at $1 billion, has filed for bankruptcy in the US. It has agreed to sell some assets, including certain intellectual property licences, to Walt Disney for $20 million. The platform, which lets users chat with custom-built virtual personas, could shut down if no buyer agrees to continue operating it.
