South Korean authorities reported a leak of white phosphorus inside the US' Osan Air Base near Seoul. White phosphorus is a highly toxic substance that ignites on contact with oxygen and can cause severe thermal and chemical burns reaching deep tissue and bone. It is used in smoke grenades and battlefield illumination. The Osan Air Base houses F-16 fighter aircraft.
