India's leading telecom operators, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, have opposed a proposal to mandate affordable standalone voice and SMS plans. Consumer groups argue that low-income, rural and elderly users are being forced to buy costly data packs they don't need. Telecom firms, however, say voice services on modern 4G and 5G networks inherently rely on data infrastructure.
