Kolkata’s Suhrawardy Avenue has been renamed Gopal Mukherjee Road, after controversial figure Gopal Patha, who is linked to the 1946 communal riots before India’s partition. Congress leader Pawan Khera slammed the renaming, stating the avenue was earlier named after scholar Hasan Shahid Suhrawardy, not Huseyn Suharawardy, the Butcher of Bengal. Khera said the name was changed in this confusion.
