Uttarakhand scraps Madrasa Board, becomes 1st state to do so
short by Garima Garg / on Thursday, 2 July, 2026
Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to abolish its statutory Madrasa Board and replace it with the Uttarakhand State Authority for Minority Education (USAME). Unlike the earlier board, which oversaw only madrasas, USAME will regulate educational institutions run by all six notified minority communities. The state currently has 452 registered madrasas and recently sealed more than 200.
