Why are Indians increasingly keeping ₹100 and ₹200 notes with them?

Cash holdings in India rose in April-May 2026 at the fastest pace since the COVID-19 pandemic, with the share of ₹500 and ₹2,000 falling and that of ₹100 and ₹200 notes rising, Moneycontrol reported. A period of heightened economic and financial uncertainty pushed Indians towards increasing their cash holdings. This is because households usually prefer greater liquidity during such periods.
