Why do fingers pop?

The sound that fingers make when a person cracks them is thought to result from formation of bubbles in synovial fluid, the thick fluid that cushions or lubricates joints to reduce friction between bones and preserve cartilage. The sound comes from sudden release or popping of these gas bubbles due to a change in pressure as joints are stretched out.
